How to set up your vandal student account

Typically, your NetID consists of the first four letters of your last name and the final four digits of your V-Number (example: vand1234).

This NetID user name and password (which you will set in the steps below) grant you access to university computer and electronic services, such as Student Vandalmail, VandalWeb, Wireless Access, BbLearn, student software, Campus Computer Labs, and kiosks. This section describes how to create a new student account.

Step 1: First things first

Your NetID is a username/password combination consisting of the first four letters of your last name and the last four digits of your V-Number (example: vand1234).

This NetID user name and password (which you will set in the steps below) grants you access to university computer and electronic services, such as Student Vandalmail, VandalWeb, Wireless Access, BbLearn, student software, Campus Computer Labs, and kiosks. The accompanying instructions detail how to create a new student account.

Step 2: password reset process

Click the link at the conclusion of “Start the password reset process” on the first page of Vandal Setup to visit help.uidaho.edu. This will lead you to the page to reset your password.

Step 3: Re-captcha

To proceed, enter the re-captcha information you see (or check the “I’m not a robot” box) and then click the “Continue” button.

Step 4: Find your account

You will be prompted to enter your account name, ID number (this is your Vandal Number), or email address on the subsequent screen so the system can locate your account.

Enter your Vandal Number or the email address you provided on our application, and then click the button to locate your account. If you encounter the error message “Account has not been configured for password reset,” please contact the Student Technology Center at 208-885-4357.

Step 5: Verify your account

A list of verified contacts from your application to the University of Idaho will appear. Select a phone number or email address, then click the send code button.

This will send a temporary code to the email or phone number you specify (via text or voice). Obtain this code from your email, a separate window, or your phone, and then type the six-digit code into the “Enter Verification Code” text box.

Step 6: Setup your security profile

After entering the code, the page for account management will load. Here you will be prompted to create a security profile (more information on your security profile). In the future, this will allow you to reset your password.

Step 7: Set a password

After deciding whether or not to create a security profile, you can set a password for your account by choosing “Change Password” under “Account Utilities.” Keep an eye on the red writing below the password boxes; this information will indicate whether or not your password is valid.

Remember that this combination of username and password is known as your NetID and serves as your principal login to UI computing tools such as VandalMail.

Step 8: Vandal card (optional)

You may obtain a Vandal Card if you intend to do so.

Step 9: Duo multi-factor (optional)

This is an optional step. Before lessons begin, you will be required to configure Duo multi-factor authentication. However, there is a 30-day grace period before you must set it up.

How to change your account password (NetID)

After changing your password, you must remove and re-add the AirVandalGold network on all wirelessly connected devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops, to the University network.

You must visit the wifi settings page to “forget” or “delete” the AirVandalGold network from your device. Any application on your smartphone that saves your password must also be changed (Outlook or email client, for example). Students seeking assistance should visit the STC, while professors and staff can contact their TSP or local support.

Resetting Your NetID Password

Step 1

Sign in using your NetID username and password to the account administration page at https://help.uidaho.edu. The initial display will be a welcome screen.

If your password has expired, you should still have access to the account administration site, but not to other services such as Vandal Mail. If you have not established your security profile, you will be prompted to do so via a pop-up.

You can also opt out of the security profile, albeit doing so will necessitate external assistance whenever you forget your password. You must visit the Student Technology Center in person if you are a student.

Step 2

Once you have logged into the account management page, select ‘Change Password’ from the menu on the left titled ‘Passwords.’

Ensure that the account whose password you wish to change is selected.

Step 3

If you will only use a DUO Hardware Token or the DUO Mobile application for verification, select “Enable Secure MFA and have a longer password expiration.” With this option, you will never need to update your password again. If you must use voice conversations or SMS text messages to authenticate, select “Disable Secure MFA and have a shorter password expiration” instead. If you select this option, your password will be valid for 400 days.

Enter a new password for your account that differs from all previous passwords by at least one character. As you enter your password, the system will indicate which requirements you fulfill and which you do not.

Ensure that your password is completely entered before assessing if it satisfies the requirements. The password must have at least 12 characters and may not contain three consecutive letters from your name, username, or email address.

Click ‘Set New Password’ once all password requirements have been completed, and the system will set the NetID password.

Step 4

Ensure that you are greeted with a “Success” message to indicate that the update was successful. Contact your Technology Solutions Partner or the Student Technology Center if you have any problems.
