Rutgers Students’ official email service is ScarletMail (Gmail). You can access this account using your NetID and password at

ScarlerApps is the G Suite for Education deployment at Rutgers.

ScarletApps comprises the key Google-hosted applications, including Gmail, Docs, Calendar, Talk, Video, and Sites. Google has introduced dozens of additional applications to the basic package of Google Apps for Education.

ScarletApps provides Rutgers students, faculty, and staff with a plethora of communication and collaboration tools that can enhance their learning, instructional, and work environments.

This post will explain how to access email services, NetID, etc. at Rutgers.

How to log into ScarletMail

To access Rutgers Scarletmail, enter

  • Navigate to
  • Provide your NetID.
  • Provide your password.
  • Access your email by clicking “Login”

How to set up ScarletMail on your android phone

Ensure that your ScarletMail account is active before configuring ScarletMail on your Android smartphone.

  • Swipe up from the main screen to expose the app drawer on an Android device. On certain devices, all icons may be displayed on the home screen rather than in an app drawer.
  • Tap the Settings icon as you go through the programs.
  • Tap Accounts on the Settings display.
  • Tap the Add account button on the Accounts screen.
  • Tap Google on the Add an account screen.
  • Tap Next after entering your ScarletMail email address in the format
  • Google will display a notification informing you that your account is controlled by Rutgers. Click Accept.
  • Enter your NetID and password, followed by the LOGIN button.
  • If you are enrolled in NetID+, the following screen will appear. Choose the correct option and confirm the login.
  • After adding your account successfully, you may now access ScarletMail through the Gmail app on your Android device.

How to set up ScarletMail on your iPhone or iPad

As previously indicated, prior to attempting to configure ScarletMail on your iOS device, ensure that your ScarletMail account is active.

  • Follow the simple procedures below to configure your iPhone for Rutgers email.
  • Tap the Settings icon on the iOS device. The Settings icon may not be on the initial screen, so you may need to slide to the right to find it.
  • Tap Passwords & Accounts from the Settings interface.
  • Tap Add Account on the Passwords & Accounts display.
  • Tap Google from the Add Account screen.
  • You will be taken to the Google login page. Tap Next after entering your ScarletMail address in the format
  • You will be transferred to the Central Authentication Service at Rutgers University (CAS.) Enter your NetID and password for your NetID. Tap LOGIN.
  • If you are enrolled in NetID+, choose the corresponding option and authorize the login.
  • After entering in with your NetID and NetID password, and Duo authentication if you are enrolled in NetID+, you may select which services you would like to sync with your ScarletMail and tap Save.
  • You may now access ScarletMail on your iPhone via the Mail application.

What is a Net ID?

All teachers, staff, and students are assigned a NetID, a Rutgers-specific identity consisting of initials and a unique number (e.g. jqs23).

To access many of the available electronic services at Rutgers, you must activate your Rutgers NetID. Your NetID can be activated by visiting

You will need your NetID to access several Rutgers University resources, including Rutgers Canvas.

How to activate your NetID

To activate your NetID at Rutgers;

  • Visit
  • Select NetID Activation from the list of links located on the left.
  • On the following page, input the required information and click Continue.
  • If successful, the subsequent page will request a password.
  • After successfully configuring your password, you will be redirected to the Services Activation page.
  • The next step should be to configure your email services.

If you are a new student having trouble activating your NetID, double-check that you have completed the following, as they are necessary for obtaining a NetID:

  • Accepted my application for admission to Rutgers University.
  • Paid my acceptance fee more than three business days before trying to activate my NetID.

What does NetID and Services Activation do?

NetID and Service Activation permits you to do the following:

  • Set a password for authentication.
  • This will be your password for most electronic services.
  • You can configure your security questions and answers.
  • You have the option of selecting three questions and answers to reset your password.
  • Allows selection of services.
  • You may select services for which you qualify, such as ScarletApps (Google for Rutgers) and locally provided email and website services.
  • Creates your Rutgers email account.
  • This is the email address to which official correspondence and notices from Rutgers University will be sent.
  • Allows you to specify where your official Rutgers email should be sent.
  • You can choose to have your Rutgers email address forwarded to another account, or you can use the email service provided by Rutgers.

How to find your NetId

To determine your NetID, please follow the instructions listed below:

  • Navigate to
  • Click the Manage NetID Password link on the page’s left side.
  • Click the NetID Lookup link on the page’s left side.
  • Fill out the form and adhere to the given formats on the page.
  • Click NetID Search.

Note that if you are a new employee or incoming student, a NetID will be provided to you once the admissions and HR onboarding procedures have been completed.

How to reset your NetID password

If you have forgotten your NetID password, here is how to reset it.

  • Navigate to
  • Enter your information according to the examples’ format and click “Continue…” If you set up secret questions and answers, you will be allowed to enter a new password if the answers to those questions are submitted correctly.
  • If the answers are submitted wrong three times, the secret questions will be disabled for 24 hours.

How do I activate my ScarletApps service?

Before activating the ScarletApps service, you must activate a NetID and password. Go to and select NetID Activation if you do not have an active NetID.

You will have the option to activate the ScarletApps service during the NetID activation process. If you have already activated your NetID and wish to activate the ScarletApps service, please visit and choose Service Activation.

You will be required to enter your NetID and password to log in. Select ScarletApps from the list of services and click Activate Services.

What is NetID+?

NetID+ is a new service available to all active Rutgers employees and Guests that provides further security that enables university systems to confirm user identities with more assurance. Rutgers NetID+ (Plus) verifies your identity using two methods of authentication: your Rutgers NetID login/password via CAS (central authentication service) and an authentication code via Duo (second–factor security service).
