  1. Visitors can, however, take part in studies that are either for work or for fun.
  2. A B-2 child is sometimes allowed to study if he or she is with a parent and the study is not the main reason the parent is in the United States. For example, missionaries can enter as a B-2, and their kids can go to school from K–12 while the parent works on the main goal of the visit. The length of stay won’t be made too long to let a child finish a school year.

J-1 foreign medical graduates can’t change their status unless they get a waiver under section 212(e)(iii) of the Immigration and Nationality Act in response to a request from a State Department of Public Health and follow the terms and conditions of the waiver under section 212(k) of the Act, but they can go through consular processing. Other non-immigrants with the J-1 status can change to the F-1 status.
  9. M-1 nonimmigrants must go to school full-time at a school approved by SEVP.

An M-2 spouse can’t take a full course of study, but they can study at a SEVP-approved school in the United States as long as they are enrolled in less than a full course of study at the post-secondary level. The M-2 spouse can still study for work or fun. An M-2 spouse must apply for and be given F-1, M-1, or J-1 status in order to study full-time.
