How to activate your account

You must activate your NetID before you may access university systems such as My Slice and Blackboard. During account activation, you establish a password and a self-recovery method. Using this self-recovery approach, you can reset the password if you forget it.

A NetID is a personal identifier provided to students, teachers, and staff at Syracuse University that grants them access to several computing services. It normally includes of initials and last names and may also contain a number.

Every NetID owner must change their password at least once each year.

Multiple email notifications will be sent to NetID owners beginning 30 days prior to their password expiration date, informing them that they must update their password to prevent it from expiring. The NetID is disabled should the password expire. All resources that require the NetID and password are inaccessible after the account is disabled.

If you have not activated your NetID, you will be unable to access My Slice until you do so.

Visit netid.syr.edu, click “Activate Your NetID,” and then adhere to the on-screen instructions. To activate your NetID, you will need your SUID. After activation, you will only need your NetID and the password linked with it to access MySlice.

You will obtain your SUID number after submitting an admissions application. The letter you received from SU Financial Aid (if you are an applicant) or your SUID card will contain your SUID number.

After your application has been uploaded to the system, you will receive an email containing your SUID credentials. You can always send an email to orange@syr.edu with your full name and date of birth, and staff will retrieve your password for you. Students can only request SUID numbers.

SUMail

SUMail is administered by the University and employs the Microsoft cloud.

Your SUMail email address is your NetID@syr.edu. SUMail employs the same password you established for your NetID. If your NetID is xyzsmith, then your SUMail address will be xzysmith@syr.edu.

Newly enrolled students are assigned an official email address within 24 to 48 hours of submitting their Admissions Acceptance Form (undergraduate) or Intent to Register Form (graduate, Law), paying their tuition deposit, confirming enrollment, and activating their NetID.

After submitting their registration, first-time non-matriculated students (e.g., University College) are often assigned an official email address within a day.

Syracuse University will utilize your syr.edu email address to send you crucial account-related information regarding Blackboard, my slice, and other platforms (e.g., server information such as downtimes, scheduled maintenance, etc.). It is therefore crucial that you periodically check this email.

The supported Learning Management System at Syracuse University is Blackboard.

Once a student registers for a Blackboard-based course, an account is automatically created and the student is enrolled in the corresponding course (s). Users utilize the same NetID and password to log in to Blackboard as they did to My Slice.

Blackboard courses are not visible to students until the instructor has made them accessible. For students to view and access current and previous Blackboard courses, teachers must make them accessible.
